One para Synopsis

The film “Talnabami”, delves deep into the basic human emotions in the natural ambience of the village in Bengal. The story revolves around two village youngsters Gopal and Nepal who encounters an egoistic world at a very tender age.

It is the festival of monsoon, and the entire village is flooded. The two brothers from poor family, often go hungry, but somehow, they cannot measure the seriousness of their situation. They wander around the fields and collect palm-fruits during storms. The kids learn about the festival of Talnabami at Aunt Joti Pishi’s house and the fact that everybody in the village would be invited to the grand feast. Both the boys dream to feast at Pishis house. Nepal decided to sell palm fruit to Pishi for that would bring in some money for the starving family. Gopal is opposed to idea, because it might stake their chances of getting invited to the feast.

Much before Nepal could collect the palm fruits, Gopal manages to get it and give it to Pishi free of cost. While Nepal visits Pishi with another set of palm fruits, he finds himself in an awkward position. Optimistic Gopal waits for the invitation and tries to attract Joti Pishi’s attension. On the day of Talnabami Gopal is ready to go aunt Joti Pishi’s house, still expecting invitation and waits outside the hut. With broken heart Gopal watches the entire village proceeding towards Joti Pishi’s house. One of his friend enquired Gopal , “ Aren’t you invited ?” the little boy murmured, yes, we are. We’ll come late…..”
……….. And then it starts raining.

Citation for the Award at Zanzibar Film Festival
The FIPRESCI prize goes to a film that is set in the specific cultural context of a Dhow country, but delivers a universal message.
Set in a rural area, and seen through the eyes of a child, the film deals in a poetic and deeply moving way with relations between rich and poor, between those who belong and those being excluded -- the tragedy of exclusion, which affects not only individuals but also on a larger scale families, countries and continents.
The film is an example of high cinematographic quality achieved with an extremely low budget. We hope, that the poetic treatment of this Bengali film will not only touch film-critics but also a larger audience.

His works are known for their imaginative scope, poetry, psychological insight and realistic dialogue. Many of his novels and short stories have been made into films, including four by Satyajit Ray. (Apu Trilogy i,e, Pather Panchali, Aparajito, Apur Sansar, & Asani Sanket ).Talnabami is the last inclusion.

Director’s Note/

From the director’s point of view

“Talnabami” is my journey towards the days of my childhood. The little masterpiece of Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay deals with the subtlety of human relationship under economic repression with a lavish green backdrop of rain washed rural Bengal. I live in this land among these people of “Talnabami”. The fragrance of my soil, the hardship of my people and the cinematic element in the story led me into the voyage on celluloid.

In this of rapid urbanisation and acute economic, political and social imbalance, I hope “ Talnabami” would take us to our forgotten roots.
